What happened in 2026

What an event! Our founding year saw 104 runners on the start line, PBs smashed and a community we won't forget. Every one of our participants was incredible, from 2 loops to 26. Check out our official results for more details.

2026 filled with runners, crews, volunteers, and families looking after each other loop after loop — and 2027 entries are now open for the next gritty chapter.

What on earth is a Backyard Ultra?

The Format

A Backyard Ultra is a space where you can test your limits and see what you're made of. The format is simple: run a 4.167-mile (6.7km) loop, on the hour, every hour, until you can't go again. A Backyard Ultra is, by nature, beginner-friendly as you only run the number of loops that you want to.

The format is accessible - the course is gritty.

The last runner standing is the only finisher of the event. Everyone else is a Did Not Finish (DNF). Originating in America, this community-focused format has well and truly landed in Bristol - we can't wait to see you on our start line.

How it works

Backyard Ultra Rules

Simple format. Brutal honesty. One loop, every hour, until only one runner remains.

One measured loop The course is 4.167 miles / 6.7056 km. Same loop, same distance, every time.
The bell owns the clock A fresh loop starts every hour, on the hour. You need to be in the start corral when it goes.
No late starts If you miss the bell, that is your day done. No slipping out a few seconds behind.
Beat the hour A loop only counts if you finish it within that hour and make it back ready for the next one.
Stay on course Once a loop has started, runners stay on the route until it is complete, apart from toilet breaks.
No course-side help No outside or personal aid while you are out on the loop. Support happens back at basecamp between loops.
No artificial aids Keep it simple: no poles or other artificial aids out on the course.
Last runner standing The winner is the final runner to complete one more loop than everyone else. Everyone else is recorded as DNF, with their completed loop total shown in the results.
No finish time to chase The event is open-ended. There is no fixed finish time; it stops when the format says it stops.

What runners said

Without this community, we'd just be some tents in a field. You are the reason we do this!

The Course

Runners moving through Blaise Castle Estate with the castle visible in the landscape.

This is not a fast, flat Backyard Ultra — and that’s exactly why people love it. The Blaise Castle loop is gritty, hilly, rocky and rooty, with woodland trails, open parkland and constantly changing terrain. Every lap feels earned.

Grit over speed. Character over PBs.

The course is 4.167-mile (6.7 km) long, and winds through the varied trails of Blaise Castle Estate. From basecamp you climb towards the folly, move through woodland trails and open fields, then drop down Dynamite Hill towards the river valley. Expect around 160m of elevation gain each lap, with runnable but demanding terrain underfoot.

Good trail shoes are strongly recommended, especially if the weather turns wet. Roots, rocks, mud and slick woodland sections are all part of the route, so come prepared for a proper trail challenge rather than a polished speed loop.

The loop is fully marked with marshals for the first few loops, as well as signs and ribbon. The route is easy to follow, with no navigation required, allowing runners to focus on the rhythm of each lap, the support at basecamp, and getting back before the next bell.

Lap Distance 4.167 miles (6.7km)
Elevation Gain 160m per lap
Terrain Hilly trail, grass, woodland path, roots, rocks and a 1.5km stretch of concrete.
